The March of Progress

Filed under: Soapbox — paragardener @ 6:10 pm

In humankind’s older, mound-and-pyramid building phase of civilization, people felt that their lives were ruled over by capricious gods and goddesses acting out their whims through the forces of nature. Since then, religious and philosophical views have evolved to place ever-greater value on human life, resulting in a better social contract and quality of life for every man, woman and child.

old, nature-worshiping society:

new, humanist society:

human sacrifice ethnic cleansing and “strategic bombing”
animal sacrifice animal testing and CAFOs
institutionalized slavery underground slavery, plus sweatshops
women pressed into position of “sacred whore” sadists enjoy permanent open season on criminalized whores
“the doctor will pray for you now” inhalers that increase your chance of asthma related death; anti-depressants that increase your risk of suicide
raw-milk cheese endangers millions obesity, heart disease and diabetes
vengeance killing o.k. vengeance killings must be carried out by the State under clinical conditions
fishing by poisoning streams mining by leveling mountains and leaching the rubble with cyanide
kings selected by accident of birth political process selects most cunning sociopaths for leadership

Here’s to progress: to a smaller, faster, cellular bug/tracking device in my pocket and a bigger, deadlier car that burns less gasoline. Let progress march on with greener consumer goods, more vitamins injected into the corn flakes, and more T.V. shows about the interpersonal drama of the richest and prettiest 0.25% !

  1. Raw milk cheese? More deadly than Plague? =)

How about: Usury generally illegal / 79% APR credit cards….

    • Yeah, to be even handed, the early farming peoples did unleash a host of contagions… I guess when you don’t understand sanitation and you live in a hut in a cow paddock that can lead to trouble!

  2. As far as our Celtic side, we only kept the cows inside from Halloween to May Day.

    • I get your point, except that I don’t see the ruling powers as humanist at all.

      • Well then, you’re not seeing them for their window dressing!

Makes me think, though, we have these conservative leaders trying to take the humanity out of Christianity. They don’t look for Christ in the meek and poor and suffering, but in giant Sensurround stadium-cathedrals. Humans are merely God’s defective robot servants, and the only thing we can do is strive to better obey God’s rules and injunctions. And look forward to the Second Coming, when Angry Jesus kills off 95% of the planet.

If you take social justice out of Judaism/Christianity, you are left with some sad empty religions.
